I met Wendy of Yikes Twins on Etsy. It's such a wonderful place to meet other handmade artisans. Wendy makes these really cute and fun hooded towels for children. Today, she shares with us on how she got started on this business. Read on...

How did you come up with your shop name?
It was a mutual saying with my husband and I when we decided to have "just one more" kid, and were surprised to find out at 5 weeks along, that it would be Twins! And since it was the business that I started because I had them, we thought it only natural we named it that.

Tell our readers about yourself.
I began sewing when I was in Jr. high school and spent countless hours learning from my Grandma, who could make just about anything without a pattern. I continued to improve to adulthood by doing small projects for friends and myself. After acquiring a degree in Graphic Arts, working my way up to senior management in women’s retail, and getting married, I found myself pregnant with twins and searching for a way to stay productive.

A few years earlier my oldest daughter had received a duck hooded towel for her 1st birthday, and refused to get out of the tub if she didn’t have her ducky towel. That Christmas, I made up 6 styles that reflected the personalities of my nieces and nephews and sent them as presents. They developed the same attachment to their towels as my daughter had. The following year when I talked to family about Christmas, they all commented about how their children still loved their hooded towels.

In April 2002 my twins were born. Six months later "Yikes Twins!!" became more than just the family mantra, it became my business and contribution to our family’s way of life. To date I have designed 17 styles (12 that are currently available) that fit kids birth to 8 years. Everything that you find on my website is handmade, held to the highest standards for quality and reliability and I personally guarantee your satisfaction and your child’s love of my products.

What or who inspires you?
My children are my inspiration; Seeing them play in the dress up box of old clothes and old halloween costumes and mixing and matching them ; looking at their "free draw" pictures from school or art class creations and seeing what they like. And asking them what they want me to make and having their input on colors and styles is great, because kids see things differently than adults.

What moved you to open up your shop online?
I have been doing craft shows from SC up to NJ, for 7 years. I had alot of my customers tell me that they wanted to buy more after the show, or later in the year, and they didnt' know how to find me and order. I set up my site to initially get reorders from current customers, but then after learning about Google Adwords, I started getting customers from all over the US and that was so cool to me to be able to sell across the US. Many of my artsy friends told me about Etsy about a year ago, and I set up my store there and have hit a whole new group of people that may not have ever seen my site before.

Here are some tips (in my experience) that might help you with your chances of winning in a handmade giveaway.

1. Always read the "how you can enter" part. Most handmade giveaways will require you to visit someone's shop and let them know your favorite item or an item you'd like to win. Make sure you do that first step since it is usually a requirement.

2. Check to see if it is available to your location. Is it only for US Residents, Canadian residents, or is it worldwide? You don't want to enter a US residents only giveaway if you are in Korea.

3. Enter as much as you can. Most handmade giveaways will give you atleast 5 other ways you can win, whether it be to follow the person's site, sign up for email newsletters, blogging about the giveaway, or tweeting about their giveaway. Try to enter as much as you can! If you do decide to do this, make sure you include your information, i.e. your blog link, your Twitter address, your Facebook address, etc... In doing so, you may bring possible traffic to your own site AND the host will be able to check and see if you really did.

4. Don't miss out on your chances. Does the giveaway say "leave separate comments for each"? If you followed tip #3, the person hosting the giveaway wants you to leave separate comments for each thing you did so that you will have more chances to win. 1 comment = 1 chance. I've seen so many comments on giveaways where they will leave EVERYTHING in one comment, that's a no-no. You are missing out on chances to win!

5. Leave a way of contact. Usually an email address is good. Try to enter your email addresses so spammers can't just copy and paste it. Do something like this: hmgiveaways[at]gmail[dot]com
Again, refer back to tip #1 on reading the requirements :)

6. Verify the word. Most blogs/sites have the "spam word verification" thing. Make sure you do this correctly and do not close the page too early.

What do you get? Paid for advertisements on the sidebar (under "sponsors") will change order every other day. Newest ads will be placed on the bottom. The order will change simply by moving the ad that is sitting on top to the bottom of the pack. This is so that the paid slots have a chance to move around.
